This technique works with any app that Gatekeeper doesn't trust, but if there is malware, Apple won't be able to protect you by shutting it off when it activates or is discovered. The developer, for whatever reason, decided not to do this, so Gatekeeper doesn't trust it to run without intervention. To do this, the app must be "notarized" with a code signature that says Apple knows about this specific version of the app and who wrote it. Why this exists: Gatekeeper is trying to make sure that this app is safe and trustworthy, and if it turns out not to be (like it has a virus or something), then it can be shut off by Apple remotely. This will tell Gatekeeper that you trust this app and it won't bug you about it anymore. This will pop up an alert that says "macOS cannot verify the developer of 'Notational Velocity'". Right click/control click the app icon, and select "Open" from the context menu.
